During the shelling of Rubizhne in the Lugansk region, Russian troops hit a tank with nitric acid. This was announced on April 5 by the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration Serhiy Haidai.

The size of an acid vapor cloud hasn’t been estimated yet, since the amount of liquid that was in the tank is unknown.

He urged the city residents not to leave the bomb shelters, and to close the doors and windows while indoors.

«Nitric acid is dangerous when inhaled, swallowed, and when it comes into contact with the skin and mucous membranes. Acid vapors irritate the respiratory tract. In case of mild poisoning, there are signs of bronchitis, dizziness, drowsiness, in case of severe poisoning — pulmonary edema. To protect against vapors and nitric acid mist, gas masks are used,» Haidai emphasized.

The head of the Regional Military Administration recommended preparing wet face masks and reminded that when locally applied to the eyes, nitric acid causes severe damage with large necrosis of the cornea and conjunctiva, which leads to loss of vision.
